Display Case

This month our display case is filled with pie birds loaned to us from Jan Grider. Pie birds are used to vent steam to prevent pie filling from  boiling up and leaking through the crust. They are placed in the center of a fruit or meat pie before baking and it keeps the crust from sagging in the middle as well as venting. The idea originated in Europe and has been used since Victorian times. The nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence" makes reference to "Four and twenty blackbirds, baked in a pie..." but it is uncertain whether pie vents were designed to look like birds because of this song. Stop by the library during the month of February to see all the interesting varieties!

Thank you, Jan!!
